Yes, I am coming right about and saying it. Most people with ADHD do not make good liars! Some people with ADHD can and do come up with some very believable and sometimes even great lies. Manipulation can often be a strength for people with ADHD. Just look at how many adults with ADHD are in sales, marketing, and politics.Being a good liar takes more than just coming up with a good lie. It's takes careful planning and remembering! Liars need to remember exactly what lie they told and which people they told the lie to. If you can't remember where you put your keys or when to pay your bills you…

The stomach virus is known to strike cruise ship passengers and other people living in close quarters, causing nausea and diarrhea, but the agency said in a report Thursday that this outbreak—which happened in February—looks to have been caused by contaminated shellfish. • Neurofeedback: An ADHD Treatment That Retrains the Brain?

A controversial treatment for overcoming attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is getting new respect. Called neurofeedback therapy, it supposedly retrains the brain to produce electrical patterns associated with calm and focus. Advocates claim that neurofeedback brings permanent ADHD cures, a seemingly magical alternative to years of medication.
  • How to Know if Your Teenager Is Abusing ADHD Prescription Drugs

If your 13-year-old seems superhyper today, it may not just be the ginormous Frappuccino he had for lunch. More and more kids are abusing ADHD stimulant drugs, which are easy to get from friends at school—or from a friend's medicine cabinet. I don't yet have children old enough to make this a worry (though my 13-year-old nephew is all about those Grande Frappuccinos). So I asked Jennifer Setlik, an assistant professor of pediatrics at Cincinnati Children's Hospital who has researched the increase in ADHD stimulant drug abuse, what parents should do to minimize the risk. Those analyses had suggested that rates were improving only minimally, despite efforts to screen for and prevent many cancers, according to Reuters. I am almost 39. Just diagnosed 2 months ago. It's very confusing for me as you all know. Finding the right doc, and of course the rollercoaster of finding the right med. We were both very relieved when I got "figured out". But now I am feeling the pressure to get better fast now that I'm on meds. It's like I feel like I need to fake feeling cured so he won't get impatient with me. Whenever I have to switch meds he thinks it's just because I read something negative about that one. He has no clue how hard it is on me mentally and physically to have a bad reaction to a very powerful medicine.

Ever heard these questions: “Why don't others work harder?” “Why is this happening to me?” “Why do they make it so difficult for me to do my job?” How do you feel now after reading them? When I say them, I feel powerless, like a victim. Questions with a “Why me?” tone to them say, “I'm a victim of the environment and the people around me.” Not a very productive thought, is it? It also gets in the way because you’re so busy coming up with wonderful ideas that you never take the time to implement any of them. Here’s a strategy you can use to manage your ideas and connect them with action items. And, you don’t have to slow your busy brain down to a snail’s pace. I really wanted to buy a stationary bicycle, but was a little leary about the cost. The bicycle that I wanted to purchase was $240.00, the gym I would have signed up for was $160.00 for a year. According to my comparison I would need to use the bicycle consistantly for a year and a half, if I wanted to get the same financial benefit as belonging to a gym. Sometimes, there are weeks in which many of my clients seem to be dealing with a similar challenge. For the past week, that challenge can best be described as "The Blahs." It's not that things are falling apart, but stress and overwhelm are kicking in for what seems like no particular reason. More than anything, people are feeling tired, bored, and just kinda "blah." Since this is a recurring theme in my coaching, and I have to admit I've felt it a bit myself, too, I can only conclude one thing: this inexplicable blah feeling is a result of season changes. • Accidental Flow

Becca Colao, MA, Senior Certified ADHD Coach
    29 Oct 2009 | 1:16 pm
Today I had an experience I haven't had in a while. I started doing some things this morning that needed to be done; but they weren't what I planned on doing. The trouble was that it felt really good to do them, I could finally get it taken care of, I didn't mind doing it for once, and I wasn't really working hard to get them done. This can happen with hyperfocus- where you get so focused on something it is hard and even painful to break it off; or it can just happen with a sort of flow. There are some things that can help manage this accidental flow or accidental hyperfocus:…

    20 Oct 2009 | 1:20 pm
Any day now, or at least within the next few weeks, I'm going to have a baby. As I've mentioned before, my ADHD seems to be getting worse right here at the end of pregnancy- or at any rate, I'm more forgetful and spacier, which I think many women are late in pregnancy anyway. So when I'm not too exhausted and I have time to work, I'm trying to figure out how to wind down my work and at the same time tie up loose ends. Now and then I remember what I've said here myself: leave myself a trail of breadcrumbs to come back to- both for now and for when I start working again…

From the last post:When my thinking hijacks my experience, I don't buy into it. I notice it, step back from it as best I can, consider myself hijacked if I can't get out of it and down to earth, and wait it out. I like to think I experience the whole thing less nowadays as a result, but that when it springs up, it doesn't feel like a comment on my identity, nor some dialog I need to be obsessively involved in.That's good because the hijacking has happened recently. Another thing that is different is that I can pinpoint- or guess- physical causes, which helps me minimize the…

    13 Oct 2009 | 11:44 am
In my last post I said that it's easier to let go of trying to think my way back because I know now thatI will find my way back to what's important. I don't need to think my way there. How do I know this? What changed? That's a question a lot of people I talk to (including my coaching clients) want to know about, because it's hard to believe that it will change when you are stuck feeling like you have to lasso yourself onto all of your ideas. One thing I mentioned last week bears repeating: I am not (nor are you) the sum of my ideas. That makes it ok to lose track of my…

  • Putting a Spotlight on Seasonal Affective Disorder

    7 Nov 2009 | 2:53 am
Almost exactly one year ago I made a discovery: I suffered from Winter Depression, otherwise known as Seasonal Affective Disorder. As I detailed in “I Wondered What Was Happening”, I had been on the lookout for a change in my behavior once Autumn rolled in. Then I forgot about it. (Ah, blessed ADHD)When Daylight Savings Time began I had a rocky week. Most of us do. The shift in our sleep schedule is like experiencing jet lag without all the exotic scenery. At first. I thought I was just having a hard time adjusting as usual, but by the end of the first week I remembered what I was…

    7 Nov 2009 | 2:53 am
Here is a creepy photo I took with my iPhone. I love how menacing a common school hallway became with a bit of a tiltshift effect and toy camera coloring. Continuing the creative writing practice I started two weeks ago, I invite you to play along. The photo practically begs you to ask the question: What danger is awaiting at the end of this hallway?I'll start:Stewart gripped his Glock tightly as he slipped up the stairwell to the fifth floor. Today he was going to end it. He'd take back his life and put an end to the people who tormented him. He had it all worked out. He'd burst through the…

  • Happy Hallow's Eve

    7 Nov 2009 | 2:51 am
Here is a discarded prologue from my novel in progress. It reveals too much about the beast too early in the story and wastes all that emotional involvement from the reader on a secondary character. I will most likely rewrite this part to feature my main character, Meridee, and place it later in the novel. However, I thought it set a perfect mood for tonight's festivities even if the fog here is white instead of smokey black…A black, smokey fog roiled at Laurana Brady’s feet as she scrambled through the brush. The fog rushed along the forest floor as if searching for the twelve-year-old,…

    25 Oct 2009 | 8:46 am
Adderall XR went generic in the US in April 2009. I wrote an initial blog post about it here: Generic Adderall XR. You can also review the nature of generic medicines in an article here: Are Generics The Same?. While my initial thoughts were that the generic Adderall XR was very similar to the trade brand (made by Shire), the comments on my blog post made it clear that many people are finding that the generic version of Adderall XR just doesn’t work as well as it is supposed to. As DS writes: “After the first week, I really felt a difference, but tried to put it out of my mind. My…

Beth Ditto explained that when she was finally diagnosed with ADHD, it helped to explain many of the struggles she’s had in her life. You can read more about it here. I am happy to see that celebrities with ADHD are starting to step forward more readily. That is a good indication that we are moving toward less stigma with this condition – which will hopefully help people to get the help that they need, and break down many of the myths that are out there about this common condition. The BBC has published a recording of what it is like to live with a boy with ADHD. In this 7 minute recording, there is an initial discussion amongst the reporters, and then we can hear a boy and his mother interacting. They have actually recorded ‘Craig’ losing his temper, and acting out. This is one picture of ADHD – and of course – it is not always this difficult. They report that prescriptions of Ritalin have risen by one third in the past 4 years in England. The conservative shadow children’s minister – Tim Loughton expresses concern that there are…

  • Love and ADHD a Bittersweet Reality

    Bryan Hutchinson
    5 Nov 2009 | 10:49 am
To be loved. Can I be loved? Am I lovable? Have you ever asked those questions of yourself? Have you ever stayed up nights, wondering why - why can’t I be loved? ADHD often seems like a bittersweet reality. Many of us are creative, we are exciting and we can find things to do when the rest of those around us are bored out of their minds and yet, and this is the part that hurts, no matter how exciting we may be, how much we can liven up a boring moment for others, or how creative we may be, we all too often still feel lonely. So lonely, and then it comes, like a shadow from the dark corner,…

Have you ever had relationships, so strong, so powerful, and ever so meaningful, that after that special person, or people, left, parts of yourself left too? There are times when you can still feel them nearby, as if they are right there – you can almost touch them, but only, only, almost – fleetingly, across the sky, like a shooting star or a floating cloud. When we are alone, unexpectedly, we may start thinking about them for no reason at all and, we miss them so deeply, so much it hurts ever so painfully, it brings tears to our eyes and we wonder why – ? Just this topic alone,…

Sometimes a relationship needs to end In today’s world it seems we are obsessed with couples counseling, relationship solutions and even medication that will make a partner behave better for the needs of another. Don’t get me wrong, I am all for improving relationships and finding the middle of the road that may help two people get their spark back, and recover long lost reasons for being together in the first place. And yet, there could come a point when we realize it just isn’t meant to be and we lose valuable time not admitting this. I know, I have done it and I had a…
  • ADHD and Narcissism

    Bryan Hutchinson
    23 Oct 2009 | 12:20 am
People with ADHD have enough problems without being compared to evil tyrants. There are few things which upset me more than when someone with ADHD is called narcissistic. I compare the term closer to a curse word more than anything else when used to describe someone with ADHD. Several rulers of the past who sought world domination are often described as the embodiment of narcissism. I agree with that, I go a step further and hazard to believe that they may have had narcissistic personality disorder, among other issues. We also tend to think of such rulers as evil, and why not, they utterly…

A dense but fascinating report describes a computer-modeling study that analyzed the influence of social learning versus the influence of media coverage of celebrity suicides in creating clusters of suicides. The increase in focus on non-politician celebrities, the spread of reality television, and the globalization of media may be leading to an increase in clusters of copycat suicides, the authors conclude. New media guidelines are in order, they add. RESULT: The Cultural Dynamics of Copycat Suicide PLoS One | Sep 30, 2009 Childhood adversity, medical illnesses, impulsivity, aggression,…

Having worked in the White House as a clerical assistant, I was managing phone calls, email and other tasks for staffers. There was to be a photo shoot after dinner and we were all instructed to attend. I recall sitting with other secretaries when, right in the middle of the dinner, the main phone rang. I heard someone yelling to my co-worker that we really needed to be answering the White House phone.
