  • Scientists discover alterations in brain's reward system related to attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder

    3 Feb 2010 | 8:00 pm
Until now, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) was related to alterations in the brain affecting attention and cognitive processes. Researchers in Spain have now discovered anomalies in the brain's reward system related to the neural circuits of motivation and gratification. In children with ADHD, the degree of motivation when carrying out an activity is related to the immediacy with which the objectives of the activity are met. This would explain why their attention and hyperactivity levels differ depending on the tasks being carried out.
  • Neural processing differences in ADHD in individuals with and without prenatal alcohol exposure

    3 Feb 2010 | 2:00 am
The adverse effects of prenatal alcohol exposure on behavioral, cognitive, and social development can lead to a range of symptoms referred to as fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD). Attention and cognition problems seen in individuals with a history of prenatal alcohol exposure often resemble those linked to attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). An assessment of these disorders has found that while children with FASD may meet the behavioral criteria for ADHD, their attention difficulties differ in subtle but important respects.

    29 Jan 2010 | 5:00 am

We are more than a week into 2010 and like many people I have some goals for the new year. I don't really make "Resolutions" anymore (you can read more about my thoughts on New Years Resolutions over on ADHD Allies) but I use the new year to come up with new goals and reevaluate previous goals. One of my goals this year is to practice being more positive. I don't think I'm really a negative person but I can sometimes get sucked into focusing too much on negative things. These negative things can be stimulating to my brain too and can take me away from the things I really want and need to be…

Even though college students with ADHD are no longer covered under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) or Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, they are still protected against discrimination.   There are two main laws that protect students, but they are different in many ways. These laws mandate that all students, regardless of disability receive "access and opportunity" but do not guarantee success. Whether or not...

Although our members are from all over the United States, as well as all over the world, where I live it is winter, and it is cold!! The cold weather can keep us huddled inside where it is warm and cozy. But being stuck inside can make you restless, especially if hyperactivity is an issue.   So my question this week is:   How do you manage your hyperactivity, or your child's hyperactivity, during the cold winter...

This is also sometimes called mixed-handedness.   So, my question this week is:   Are you Right-Handed, Left Handed or Ambidextrous?   This is an interesting concept and I will look forward to yoru replies as well as future studies on this topic.   Read the article: Higher Risk of ADHD in...
  • Higher Risk of ADHD in People Who Are Ambidextrous

    26 Jan 2010 | 11:39 am
Ambidextrous, or mixed-handed, is the "ability of being equally adept with each hand." [Nationmaster.com Encyclopedia] Those born ambidextrous are rare, most of the time this is learned. The majority of people that are ambidextrous were originally left handed and learned to use their right hand, possibly because of social and cultural pressures. Many people, even though able to use both hands equally, still have a dominant hand. Still, only...

  • Mixed-Handed Kids May Struggle With ADHD, Learning Problems

Being ambidextrous may not be as neat as it sounds; children who are mixed-handed are more apt to struggle with learning and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), according to a new study in Pediatrics. It found that ambidextrous children were twice as likely to have difficulties with language and school at age 8 as were right-handed or left-handed children. And mixed-handed kids were more likely to have symptoms of ADHD in adolescence, particularly if they had other behavioral problems. Being mixed-handed doesn't mean a child is destined to have difficulties. But parents of an…

The fist bump is one manifestation of Mandel's obsessive-compulsive disorder; he has attention deficit disorder as well. • Curbing Mom's Smoking, Childhood Lead Exposure May Be Key to Preventing ADHD

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder takes a huge toll on children, with about 9 percent of kids ages 8 to 15 displaying diagnosable symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsive behavior that can make schoolwork an ordeal and friendships trying. Maternal smoking and lead exposure in early childhood might be behind nearly 40 percent of ADHD cases, according to new research. If that turns out to be true, it may be possible to prevent many cases of ADHD and reduce the huge social, financial, and personal toll of the disorder. While the cause (or, most likely, causes) of ADHD remains…

I thought my son was doing well on his meds. We finally got the correct dose and got the timing settled. He had several really good weeks at school. Now, in the last week or so, he has become ultra annoying. He aggravates people to get a reaction. One boy in his class is a particular target. It doesn't help that the other boy can also be annoying at times. Intially he asked the boy to stop doing whatever it was that bothered him (humming and singing?). Then the little boy started doing it more on purpose. Ok, that seems like typical boy behavior--nothing unusual. I should also note that they…

I was diagnosed with ADHD about a year ago. I honestly don't know if I really do have it because I didn't really show many symptoms before highschool. The main reason for me getting tested was because of my grades. Here are some of my symptoms. If I am interested in a subject I can usually concentrate fine. If its boring I space out big time. I have a hard time starting things especially homework. Sometimes I can sit down and to whatever sometimes I can't what so ever. So either, I'm telling a good story, or he's just too lazy to ask questions. I have 2 more appointments with him this week... do you think it would be a good idea to summarize a list of things i've found out about myself to give him? It would save a lot more time rather than him just listen to me ramble about all the issues i've been having. BTW this guy doesn't give tests, just gives assessments- Any of you…

I'm still trying to balance what dosage is right for me and what time I need to eat, etc., but I'm starting to get a little freaked out about the food thing and even more freaked out about the way some people talk about the pretty harsh limits on food intake and various vitamins. Being a vegan has drastically improved my health, but it's important to keep a balanced diet and to make sure that I'm getting enough of what I need. And it's kind of hard for me to gain a lot of weight unless I'm either eating A LOT or I'm eating a…

My personal philosophy when it comes to managing my daily expenses is to make it as simple as possible. I also prefer to use management systems that are inexpensive. Not only does a simple system work for me, but using a simple system seems to work better for many adults with ADHD. Recently I came across the Home Budget Book , which is an excellent budget planning notebook for people who have trouble tracking their finances. The Home Budget Book  has pre-filled categories to help you track your daily income and spending for a year.

With a struggling economy more people are looking for ways to save money. Rebates can seem very enticing when deciding to purchase a product. I think that most adults with ADD should avoid rebate offers altogether. If you remember to fill out the rebate form, you will find that many rebate forms are difficult to fill out and require a lot of documentation. This is why Business Week estimated that 40% of rebates are never redeemed. In the past I have purchased products with mail-in rebates and have had mixed results, but nothing compared to these…

    5 Feb 2010 | 3:11 pm
A couple of weeks ago I published a newsletter and blog post titled A Personal Note from Jen in which I began to tell the story of my (continuing) journey toward health and wellness. I promised that I would talk about the different elements in that journey on this blog, and so I begin with this post. Before diving into my personal story, I want to first explore what "being healthy" means to me. For starters, being healthy is not something that can be defined by someone or something else. Health is not about an "all clear" at my yearly physical. Health is not about being "in range" on blood or…

Every now and then I write a newsletter in which my personality really shines through (curse words and all), and I worry just a little about pissing people off.
  • It's Time for Me to Write a New Book...and I Need Your Help!

    Jennifer Koretsky
    1 Feb 2010 | 7:46 am
It's been about 2 and a half years since my book Odd One Out: The Maverick's Guide to Adult ADD was published, and it's time for me to get going on my next writing project. The trouble is, I don't know what to write about! I've been thinking about starting work on a new book this year, and I have yet to get that feeling in my gut that says "THIS is what you need to write about!" Some of the ideas I've tossed around are: Time management (for ADDers? for everyone?) Advanced ADD management Health and ADD Health and __________? Living out loud (self-acceptance, goal setting and follow through,…

I have a confession to make. I’ve had a number of health issues in the last couple of years, and I’ve been keeping quiet about them. But all that’s changing. Now before you start worrying about me, let me just come right out and tell you that my health concerns are not life-threatening. I don’t have cancer, I don’t need an organ transplant, and I’m not in the hospital! Nonetheless, I’ve been miserable. And I have a hunch that many of you will be able to relate. And before you read too far, I just want to warn you that this note is me unbridled. I’m holding nothing back. You…

Way back in October, which seems both like yesterday and like two years ago, I left myself a trail of breadcrumbs in this very blog. This helped me to feel like I wouldn't lose track of everything and myself while I was immersed in new baby-ness, and gives me a way to gently find my way back into my work. This is especially important when work is self-motivated, self-defined, and self-structured. My second son was born mid-November, and I've been working again since the beginning of the year, gradually building things up. As we speak I am sitting in a coffeeshop with my baby in his…

    29 Oct 2009 | 1:16 pm
Today I had an experience I haven't had in a while. I started doing some things this morning that needed to be done; but they weren't what I planned on doing. The trouble was that it felt really good to do them, I could finally get it taken care of, I didn't mind doing it for once, and I wasn't really working hard to get them done. This can happen with hyperfocus- where you get so focused on something it is hard and even painful to break it off; or it can just happen with a sort of flow. There are some things that can help manage this accidental flow or accidental hyperfocus:…

Any day now, or at least within the next few weeks, I'm going to have a baby. As I've mentioned before, my ADHD seems to be getting worse right here at the end of pregnancy- or at any rate, I'm more forgetful and spacier, which I think many women are late in pregnancy anyway. So when I'm not too exhausted and I have time to work, I'm trying to figure out how to wind down my work and at the same time tie up loose ends. Now and then I remember what I've said here myself: leave myself a trail of breadcrumbs to come back to- both for now and for when I start working again…

  • This Is As Exciting As My Life Gets

    8 Feb 2010 | 5:09 pm
This 3D picture represents the incredible rocket ride I live through every day. Why, I can hardly stop to catch my breath. Look at that cane—a 3D metaphor for my life. Doesn't your heart just pound in your chest with excitement⸮ It's better than Avatar. Sickness, insomnia, ticking, and teenage insurrection. These four horsemen of my own personal apocalypse have kept me quite busy lately. Truthfully, I could use a little less of that kind of excitement. Winter cannot end fast enough for me. I attended a dinner party on Saturday that I would love to tell you about, but I am pressed for…

  • Depression Came in Through the Back Door

    8 Feb 2010 | 4:50 am
There are times when life can be overwhelming. Usually, trauma, injury, death, or heartbreak can knock normally upbeat people off their stride. Then there are people such as myself whose brains are wired in curious, but dysfunctional, ways. We tend to get knocked off our stride if the wind’s blowing the wrong way. Speaking for myself, I am often frustrated how fragile my mind seems. Not hearty or rugged, but delicate and easily crumpled. This tends to make me angry at myself, so I overcompensate in some alpha male way like exercising or attacking a pile of clutter. This leads me to…

Last night at this time I was standing in line to get a burger. Tonight I'm lying down in bed trying to turn my sleep schedule around. If you follow me here or on Twitter, you know what a raving insomniac I am. After a bout of sickness last December, my schedule was flipped far out of control—even worse than the moon in Space: 1999. Without the benefit of a cute Mia with mannish sideburns to magically fix things, I've been left to my upside down fate. I've worked hard on the project this month, and that has only made the schedule worse as I did all my heavy writing in the still hours of…

    2 Feb 2010 | 4:51 am
As my little nightowls retire to their nests, the home becomes my silent domain again. In the quiet, I can finally think. Tonight I am thinking about the manuscript I finished on Saturday. I polished it throughout the day, then again at night. I felt confident enough about the story to email it to the agent who gave me suggestions last time. I don't know why, but this feels different than my magazine and web page gigs. The funny thing is that the manuscript is a short, wee sprig of words. My last article was nine times longer, a veritable tree in comparison. What's to worry about? It's not as…

As a doctor who works in the field of ADD/ADHD, I know that the ’standard’ medical treatments for ADD/ADHD don’t always provide the answers and solutions that people need. ‘Alternative’ or ‘complimentary’ treatments are used very frequently, and most of the time, people don’t talk to their doctor about it. Over the years, there have been many studies which show that if one studies the incarcerated population, the rates of ADHD are upwards of 50%. This is a huge public health concern. Despite having read this statistic a number of times from different studies, I haven’t heard of any actual treatment studies. I wondered why no one had proactively gone into the jails and started assessing and treating people for ADHD to improve their quality of life, functioning and improve their chances of meeting their goals after they are released from custody. I’ve just read about a study in Sweden…

This means that it is available in pharmacies (though if you are the first person to take a prescription to your pharmacy, they may have to order it in and it may take a day or two…). In Canada, Vyvanse has been approved at only two dosage strengths: 30 mg and 50 mg. Health Canada has asked for more data to approve the 70 mg capsule. Hopefully this dosage will get approval soon. When Vyvanse launched in the US, it was approved initially with the three doses – 30 mg, 50 mg, and 70 mg. Later, Shire…

My doctor suggested it could also help me be a better listener in my relationship. I worry that it has worked too well. As I’ve mentioned before, I suck at listening. • Twist 'n Write Pencils and Pens

    Terry Matlen
Many children (and adults) with ADHD have poor fine motor skills. That means, in my case at least, sewing, handwriting and other fine motor skills are quite a challenge For children, that often means struggling at school because handwriting is often very messy. So when I heard about the PenAgain Twist ‘n Write, I thought I’d share it with you. The Twist 'n Write's primary focus is comfort, allowing your hand to relax and letting the weight of your hand hold the pen/pencil in place. Check it out HERE

  • When Kids Can't Sleep, YOU Can't Sleep

    Terry Matlen
Kids with ADHD often have trouble falling asleep. And mine is no different. She’s been on sleep meds for many years and though they sedate her, she fights the sensation and becomes even more hyperactive.
