Adderall + Too Much Sleep = Brain Fog???
20 Nov 2009 | 11:38 amSo for the last few weeks I've noticed that if I sleep for more than 5-6 hours, I wake up extremely tired and foggy-headed. I don't mean a little foggy either, more like my head is stuffed with cotton! It's awful because I'm never getting enough sleep, but if I sleep in at all the next day is unpleasant. I also lose all focus, motivation, and feel like I weigh 500 pounds. When this happens (like it did yesterday, today I got up after 5 hours of sleep and feel fine) I notice that to make matters worse my Adderall is much much less effective, at least until the evening. I'll admit that I… -
How long until I notice that Adderall starts working?
20 Nov 2009 | 11:22 amI am 23 and have just been diagnosed with ADD. I have suspected for a long time that I have ADD but finally just got "tested" and diagnosed. My doctor started me on Strattera but that was bad. All day I was mentally exhausted and incredibly lethargic and then around 9pm the fog would lift off but by then my body was physically exhausted because it was late and I was ready to start slowing down to fall asleep. However, I would not fall asleep until like 2:30-3:00 am. Then wake up at 7 or 8 am. So my doctor prescribed me Hydroxyzine to help me sleep. I was also really nauseous every morning and…

And was intrigued and quite curious to read what I thought said "The Elvis of Facebook." Quite a number of seconds went by while I pondered "The Elvis of Facebook" and how this could possibly relate to ADHD...I wondered, IS There an Elvis of Facebook? Fascinating! After a brief…

The Big Break Up ( When changing financial habits isn't just about the money)
15 Nov 2009 | 6:00 pmRecently I had to end a relationship. I will admit that I was still happy in the relationship, but the relationship wasn't good long term for me. I never really discussed the relationship with my wife, but the evidence was clear. Sometimes I would leave half filled styrofoam cups of coffee in the car, other times the car would be filled with bags and wrappers that had the name of the one I was having this relationship with. Ever since I ended the relationship I have been a lot less nervous and I have had a few more dollars in my pocket. If you haven't figured it out… -
One Key Focus
8 Nov 2009 | 6:40 amRecently, I consolidated some debt into my credit card. I am not going to go into the details, but after reviewing my finances I have made my main financial focus to pay off the balance on this card within 18 months. I believe that this is a slightly ambitious goal but also one that is achievable with a little persistence and a little sacrifice. Focusing on one key financial goal is generally a good idea for someone with ADD. Having one large goal is easier to focus on because it should have a significant impact on your life, it is also easier to track versus having several… -

Success Stories Adult ADD / ADHD (Notehall.com)
25 Oct 2009 | 2:52 pmI am always looking for great stories about adults with ADD, I especially like stories about ADD entrepreneurs who start a business to deal with an issues that affects many people with ADD. While surfing the internet I found an article from the Rancho Sante Fe Review about Sean Conway. Conway founded a company called Notehall.com that allows college students to purchase notes from lectures on-line. Although I do not have ADD, I would have found this a tremendous service in college, because I could not take notes and pay attention to a lecture at the same time. Sean was…

What Has Helped Me with Adult ADD
12 Nov 2009 | 2:54 pmWhat Has Helped Me with Adult ADDPost from: Adult ADD Strengths This is from someone I coached. Thought some of you might find it helpful. Pete What Has Helped Me with Adult ADD Hi, I don’t know if you have adult ADD or ADHD (I have ADD), but I sure feel for you. I was diagnosed this summer, shortly before I was fired for the second time. Looking back I realize it’s been going on for 10 years. It’s caused huge financial and family turmoil that we’re still working through. I was doing good work on individual projects, but missed I appointments, was late on important documents, and felt… -

Delay Is Not Preferable to Error
18 Nov 2009 | 12:22 pmLast week, I saw Thomas Jefferson's quote "Delay is preferable to error" running all around the Internet, and I had to cringe. This "inspirational" quote is dangerous for adults with ADD, especially those who struggle with perfectionism. (And I haven't met a single adult with ADD who doesn't get stuck in perfectionist mode in at least one or two areas.) "Delay is preferable to error" could be adopted as a motto for perfectionists. If you've ever coached with me, then you know that I can easily pick up on perfectionist tendencies, probably because I've struggled with them, myself, in the past… -
Adults with ADD: Are You Feeling Blah?
7 Nov 2009 | 1:00 amSometimes, there are weeks in which many of my clients seem to be dealing with a similar challenge. For the past week, that challenge can best be described as "The Blahs." It's not that things are falling apart, but stress and overwhelm are kicking in for what seems like no particular reason. More than anything, people are feeling tired, bored, and just kinda "blah." Since this is a recurring theme in my coaching, and I have to admit I've felt it a bit myself, too, I can only conclude one thing: this inexplicable blah feeling is a result of season changes. While not all of us suffer from… -

Accidental Flow
29 Oct 2009 | 1:16 pmToday I had an experience I haven't had in a while. I started doing some things this morning that needed to be done; but they weren't what I planned on doing. The trouble was that it felt really good to do them, I could finally get it taken care of, I didn't mind doing it for once, and I wasn't really working hard to get them done. This can happen with hyperfocus- where you get so focused on something it is hard and even painful to break it off; or it can just happen with a sort of flow. There are some things that can help manage this accidental flow or accidental hyperfocus:… -

Winding Down
20 Oct 2009 | 1:20 pmAny day now, or at least within the next few weeks, I'm going to have a baby. As I've mentioned before, my ADHD seems to be getting worse right here at the end of pregnancy- or at any rate, I'm more forgetful and spacier, which I think many women are late in pregnancy anyway. So when I'm not too exhausted and I have time to work, I'm trying to figure out how to wind down my work and at the same time tie up loose ends. Now and then I remember what I've said here myself: leave myself a trail of breadcrumbs to come back to- both for now and for when I start working again… -
Errands or Guests? how not to decide anything.
15 Oct 2009 | 7:42 amFrom the last post:When my thinking hijacks my experience, I don't buy into it. I notice it, step back from it as best I can, consider myself hijacked if I can't get out of it and down to earth, and wait it out. I like to think I experience the whole thing less nowadays as a result, but that when it springs up, it doesn't feel like a comment on my identity, nor some dialog I need to be obsessively involved in.That's good because the hijacking has happened recently. Another thing that is different is that I can pinpoint- or guess- physical causes, which helps me minimize the… -
Transitioning Back Part 2.
13 Oct 2009 | 11:44 amIn my last post I said that it's easier to let go of trying to think my way back because I know now thatI will find my way back to what's important. I don't need to think my way there. How do I know this? What changed? That's a question a lot of people I talk to (including my coaching clients) want to know about, because it's hard to believe that it will change when you are stuck feeling like you have to lasso yourself onto all of your ideas. One thing I mentioned last week bears repeating: I am not (nor are you) the sum of my ideas. That makes it ok to lose track of my…

Mailbag: A Prepubescent Proposal
20 Nov 2009 | 12:35 amMost of my day is spent ticking or driving and sometimes ticking in between driving. I am the full time parent and so the onus of driving the clan around lies on me. This can take a lot out of me neurologically. My wife might argue that I spend more time reading news than ticking or driving, but I'm going to ignore her. I ask that you do, too. On days that I'm not ticking or driving, I can be found examining my navel. It's not necessarily a pretty one, although it's clean, but I do spend a lot of time looking at it while trying to figure out how to do things better. Actually, that whole navel… -
Living the AD/HD Hunter Analogy—or How Castle Distracted Me
20 Nov 2009 | 12:34 amAh, do you smell it? The scent of The Hunt? Do you hear the crisp, cool clacking of the keyboard, and feel the eyes darting over the glowing screen seeking out clues… Nothing thrills my AD/HD mind more than the solving a puzzle in The Hunt. As an art geek of sorts, I love pen & ink. I write notes with an old school fountain pen. I prefer the skritch of metallic nib on paper over the tactile-less glide of stylus over pad. Maybe one day soon I'll take my art gear and go out and actually draw something again. When I came across the Dux Variable Precision Sharpener and successfully hunted… -
In Which Douglas Pretends to Write a Short Entry About Free Books & Fertilizer
20 Nov 2009 | 12:33 amIdeally, this is a short entry because I'm supposedly working as much as I can on my novel. We'll see how that goes. The spirit is willing, but the mind is weak. You may not have caught it earlier, but I was asked to review a book for ADDitude Magazine. That review is now up on their site (See Trainwreck - My Life As an Idoit). It's short & sweet and hopefully not shared here too late for Claire, who won the book a few weeks ago. Give it a read and let me know what you think of it. Speaking of winning things, I'm giving out free books here. Are you sure you want to lurk? It's not as if… -
Embarrassing AH/HD Impulses
20 Nov 2009 | 12:32 amIf there is one hallmark of AD/HD, it is the lack of impulse control. Put a group of people with AD/HD in one room and their symptoms may vary, but this hallmark is one thing they all share in common. Over the years I've learned to laugh at my AD/HD fueled moments, especially the impulsive ones. I had a chance to recall one a few weeks ago when an author friend was asking readers if they had ever lost control of themselves around a celebrity. I'm usually fairly cool around celebrities and I have my AD/HD to thank. There was one time I lost it around a celebrity. Once. The experience was so… -
Live AD/HD Feed on Twitter
20 Nov 2009 | 12:11 amHere's a live Twitter search I've been experimenting with. Many people comment on AD/HD in their daily lives on Twitter. Some accept it; some deny it. Some mock it; some praise it. I've filtered the search to leave out the several million blog posts so you should be able to get a good idea of what real people think about the subject by looking over the stream. It's likely not work safe, but any attempts to filter out cuss words have them posted in bold at the top of the page when you "Join the conversation". It made me laugh out loud. So terribly NOT what I had intended. You can reply to the…

ADHD Medication Debate Fuels One Dad To Kidnap His Son
1 Oct 2009 | 4:39 amThere is no shortage of controversy still looming over whether or not children with ADHD should be, or need to be placed on medication. While most things don’t tend to shock me… I was somewhat caught off guard by this story of a man who kidnapped his own son to keep his mother from medicating him for his ADHD symptoms. The Debate Rages On If you ask me, there is no stronger story to demonstrate to what lengths parents will go to protect their children as well as how misunderstood ADHD continues to be… Maybe throw in a little bit of confusion around how to support a child… -
ADHD Costs The United States $77 Billion Every Year
18 Sep 2009 | 4:59 amThe sensationalism of ADHD in America, and as a diagnosis continues. No surprise there!! The media jumps on the controversy and drama band wagon… Every day citizens laugh at the ADHD jokes (like one Conan O’Brien tried to crack this week during ADHD Awareness week of all times). The medical community continues to preach “deficit, disorder, and weakness…” ADHD: The $77 Billion Condition This morning I received an e-mail touting “The Cost of ADHD.” Being intrigued, I opened the e-mail and began reading. Apparently, a report published by… -
ADHD Strengths: Life Is About Legacy And Greatness
26 Aug 2009 | 5:29 amThis morning I am captured by the magic of “storytelling” and legacy. As I was enjoying my morning coffee, I happened to catch the end of the movie, “The Babe.” No, it’s NOT the movie about a pig and his travels through the farm. This story of “The Babe” is about the life and legacy of Babe Ruth. As a self-described non-baseball enthusiast, I am more drawn to the history of the game… To the history of one of the most profilic athletes to play major league baseball. And again, more importantly, I care about story… legacy…… -
ADHD Drug Abuse In Teens On The Rise
24 Aug 2009 | 8:27 amA new report released today suggests that more and more teens are abusing stimulant medications like Ritalin and Adderall. Depending upon which news outlet you are listening to, the angle and agenda is going to be slightly different. I’ve seen reports from Reuters (article here) that focus on the substantial increase in calls to Poison Control centers across the country. The Associated Press (article here) seems to be focusing on drug abuse, and a report from CBS News (article here) begins with a comparison of the abuse of marijuana to ADHD stimulant medications. Caution: Here’s…

Generic Adderall XR – New Formulations
25 Oct 2009 | 8:46 amAdderall XR went generic in the US in April 2009. I wrote an initial blog post about it here: Generic Adderall XR. You can also review the nature of generic medicines in an article here: Are Generics The Same?. While my initial thoughts were that the generic Adderall XR was very similar to the trade brand (made by Shire), the comments on my blog post made it clear that many people are finding that the generic version of Adderall XR just doesn’t work as well as it is supposed to. As DS writes: “After the first week, I really felt a difference, but tried to put it out of my mind. My… -

Gossip Lead Singer Has ADHD
2 Oct 2009 | 7:50 pmThe lead singer of the Rock Band: Gossip has revealed that she was diagnosed with ADD/ADHD. Beth Ditto explained that when she was finally diagnosed with ADHD, it helped to explain many of the struggles she’s had in her life. You can read more about it here. I am happy to see that celebrities with ADHD are starting to step forward more readily. That is a good indication that we are moving toward less stigma with this condition – which will hopefully help people to get the help that they need, and break down many of the myths that are out there about this common condition. BBC Shares What It’s Like to Live with ADHD
1 Oct 2009 | 7:59 pmThe BBC has published a recording of what it is like to live with a boy with ADHD. In this 7 minute recording, there is an initial discussion amongst the reporters, and then we can hear a boy and his mother interacting. They have actually recorded ‘Craig’ losing his temper, and acting out. This is one picture of ADHD – and of course – it is not always this difficult. They report that prescriptions of Ritalin have risen by one third in the past 4 years in England. The conservative shadow children’s minister – Tim Loughton expresses concern that there are…

ADHD Diagnosis and Treatment is Imperative for Relationships and Self!
18 Nov 2009 | 7:45 amI have written posts indicating that ADHD is not always the culprit in a broken relationship. I sincerely do not believe everything and anything is the fault, or should be blamed on an ADHD partner. However, with that said: ADHD can have devastating effects on relationships. I don’t think that’s a secret. Still, if anyone with ADHD is in a relationship and has avoided seeking help or proper treatment, or has been uncertain if doing so will help, then my best suggestion is to seek treatment because, yes, your ADHD could certainly be the cause of relationship hardships, or it… -
10 Simple Tips on Writing a Memoir
16 Nov 2009 | 4:35 amThe reception of my memoir One Boy’s Struggle by people with ADHD and without ADHD alike, and professionals, has been phenomenal. As most anyone knows, who has been reading my blog, you know I did not originally intend to publish. It all started as a therapeutic effort on my part to get my thoughts and experiences out of my head and on paper, something I could read back to myself and make sense of it all. Well, while I was making sense of my life I started to include all the things I believed would have helped me had it been known that I had ADD (ADHD), and while I did that, it was then… -
Goodbye
13 Nov 2009 | 3:53 amTrue love, with the right person, at the right time, as unpredictable as that may be, can be, and I believe is, the best self-medication the universe has ever created! The last month or so I have been writing rather frequently about love, relationships and the connection to us ADDers in general, from my point of view. I don’t know exactly why I started this indulgence; therefore, to answer a lot of emails in one post, the answer I come up with, and believe the closest to my true motivation, is that I enjoy it. I take pleasure in writing about love and relationship, probably more than I… -
If ADHD were fully controllable then it wouldn’t be ADHD
9 Nov 2009 | 8:50 amIn relationships there’s a lot of give and take. You give some, you take some and you give some more. It’s a simple and necessary principle of reciprocation. The above sentence could just about start out any relationship book, but it’s not a very good starting point for a book about ADHD, love, relationships and sex – you know, together. ADHD brings something to a relationship which is unpredictable, frustrating and exciting and, even a bit intimidating from time to time. I think it is a good guess that most people would enjoy stability in their relationship, with someone who is… -
Top Ten 10 Do and Don’t with your ADD ADHD partner

Do not say things like: “This is the right way to do this or that.” Or “That’s not the way things should be done.” Do not take his or her…

20 Nov 2009 | 1:00 pmA study in Neuroscience wonders about the similarities between junk food junkies and, well, junkies. In an experiment, rats that were given unlimited amounts of junk food had similar addictive behaviors to rats addicted to heroin. The researchers believe this occurred because the pleasure centers of the brains of rats becomes less responsive as the rats continue to consume the product that makes them feel high. So bingeing on high-sugar, high-calorie foods becomes addicting, similar to the addiction of heroin addicts. The rats needed to eat more and more of the addictive substance just to get… -
ZYDECO HELLRAISERS
20 Nov 2009 | 10:57 amWhat happens to Attention Deficit Disorder when it grows up? Sometimes it is channeled into extraordinary gifts. So Michael Phelps Picasso JFK James Carville Robin Williams… …are all reputed ADHD guys. This is hardly an exhaustive list but it’s enough to give you a flavor. I think if they named every person ever diagnosed with ADHD we would be surprised by some of the folks that were on the list– and yet not surprised at all. We would recognize the extraordinarily talented individuals who have managed to channel the annoying distractability, the daydreaming, the… -
24 Days- Not All Sunshine.
20 Nov 2009 | 10:29 amThough I’m doing well today, a few experiences over the past few days helped that “pink cloud” precipitate a little bit, and brought me back to the reality that recovery isn’t all sunshine and roses (which I should’ve known given that I dig overcast anyhow). As a supplemental tool and in preparation for the upcoming holidays, I decided to explore the use of an opioid-blocker called “Naltrexone,” which has the side effect of further curbing cravings for alcohol. I had my liver function checked (which was positive, I’m relieved to type), and was… -

The Power of Positive Attention
16 Nov 2009 | 3:50 amPositive attention - we hear these words together a lot, but what does positive attention really mean and why is it so important for children with ADHD? This can quickly take a toll on a child's self-image and feelings of self-worth. Learning to pay positive attention to your child is very… -

When All Else Fails, Use a Stapler
Years ago when my daughter announced, to my horror, that she wanted to be a Brownie, I led her to her first meeting with reluctance. I was happy for HER that she wanted to be part of this wonderful organization, where she’d meet new friends, learn new skills and develop a better super-ego. But I knew that it meant new activities for me that I hate doing: baking cookies and brownies and leading activities that involve other fine motor skills that I find difficult to do. And of course, it meant being in a room full of very noisy children every Thursday afternoon at 4pm. What I wasn’t… -
My ADHD Holiday Dinner Disaster
Those of you who have attended my ADHD presentations at CHADD, ADDA and elsewhere, might have already heard about my holiday dinner disaster story, and like I promised in an earlier post, I’m going to share it with you, here. It happened a number of years after I’d been diagnosed with ADHD and I had already gotten to the point of working hard at accepting my ADHD and learning to make accommodations for it. Still, one never knows when the ADHD blooper can take you down… In all my adult years as a married woman with children, I had never hosted a Passover dinner. For those of you not… -
Terry Meets Michelle Obama
Having worked in the White House as a clerical assistant, I was managing phone calls, email and other tasks for staffers. There was to be a photo shoot after dinner and we were all instructed to attend. I recall sitting with other secretaries when, right in the middle of the dinner, the main phone rang. I heard someone yelling to my co-worker that we really needed to be answering the White House phone. I didn’t get the phone; I was thinking how earlier that day, a woman with a whole slew of Portuguese Water Dog puppies had been walking around the grounds and how she allowed me to take one… -
Uh Oh: Halloween + Sugar = Hyperactivity?
As a parent, you’ve probably heard that children who consume too much sugar will become hyperactive. Your mother has warned you to change your child’s diet. Your friends who do not have children with ADHD, suggest you’re a lousy mother for allowing your child to eat a cookie or two every day, let alone drink a bottle of soda on occasion. After all, aren’t you supposed to be eliminating any cause for his hyperactivity? With Halloween coming, you’re probably struggling with what to do about the bags of candy already entering your home. What’s a good mother to do? Well, let’s start… -
Challenge Software Program for Self-Regulation
Periodically, people contact me with resources that they feel are helpful to those touched by ADHD. Recently, I learned of the Challenge Software Program at http://www.cpschallenge.com. Its developer, Brad Chapin LCP, LMLP, tells me that the program was Beta-tested by over 750 parents and professionals around the world. He recently launched the site to the public. This interactive internet-based application uses animated scenarios and games to engage children quickly and teach them the basics of Self-regulation (the central issue in ADHD, Depression, Anxiety, Anger, Aggression, and…
