What experts and the public have already long suspected is now supported by representative data: ADHD, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, is over-diagnosed. The study showed that child and adolescent psychotherapists and psychiatrists tend to give a diagnosis based on heuristics, unclear rules of thumb, rather than adhering to recognized diagnostic criteria. Boys in particular are substantially more often misdiagnosed compared to girls.

Then I added Wellbutrin XL 150 --> 300 mg a few years ago because I noticed the Prozac made me feel even more "spacey" than usual. (That's when I started to suspect ADD.) At the higher dose Wellbutrin helps somewhat with motivation, emotional bouyancy, and focus but increases anxiety. It doesn't do much as far as executive functions. The anxiety side effect mostly diminishes over time; all that remains is a slight undercurrent of edginess. Also,…

Recently I have fallen in love with a ToDo list. I hope this won't be too embarrassing for you, but I have taken it out on dates. In fact, I take it everywhere with me. I even sleep with it. Now, now. I realize I can't marry it…yet…but we are truly inseparable.A good ToDo list gets out of your way and just lets you write things down. A new study just came out in the International Journal of Epidemiology, called: “Post-term birth and the risk of behavioural and emotional problems in early childhood”. It was published online on May 3, 2012. The press have widely reported that this study shows that when a pregnancy goes beyond 42 weeks, then a child is more than two times more likely to develop ADHD in early childhood. You can find many media references to the study, and here is the link to a BBC article entitled: Overdue babies: ‘Risks for those born after 42 weeks’. I am largely annoyed with the…

When adults with ADD/ADHD get into long term relationships or get married, certain things can happen (because of the ADD/ADHD). There is a pattern of behavior and interaction that can develop which can undermine the relationship. This can be very hard for the adult with ADHD, and also for the spouse or partner who doesn’t have ADD/ADHD. The good news is that by understanding the nature of the challenges, and by developing the right strategies, things can improve significantly. Watch the video below to see how ADD Coach Lynne Edris, ACG explains the problem, and gives you some ideas to…

I am good at that. Very good. Too good, in fact. Breaking things, that is. But I gave it the old “I am going to try fixing it until it is so broken that I must hire someone to fix it!” try. So for a few weeks (I think)…
  • Does Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Adults with ADHD Work and is it Better than Medication?

    Bryan Hutchinson

Controlled trial results with the potential answer in this post. One of the things I have come to enjoy from blogging is reporting some of the latest studies about ADHD. It’s a lot of fun and sometimes we talk about things like Coffee isn’t so bad and how to make popcorn in a paper bag, but then there are other things we find out that we weren’t really sure about and CBT is one of those things. Does it work? In my opinion and experience: YES. But don’t take my word for it alone, I’ll give you the results of the trial in a moment. In my first book One Boy’s Struggle I…

Have you been keeping up with all of the recent studies and reports concerning ADD / ADHD? What – you haven’t? Is it because you do not have an easy way to keep track of them? If so, I have good news for you. I have an ADHD radar. It alerts me to special news about ADHD. Do you want one? You’ll have to sign a special waiver, of course. After the waiver there will be tests. If you pass those tests there will be more tests after that, but I am not that kind of guy. I cheat. For you (only you), I have a special deal = The secret to how I cheat: Go to Google News. Once you get there type…

Oh my. Oh my. This is one of those articles that you just don’t want to write. No one in their right mind wants to think about diet, much less change it. I don’t. But I will because it is important (“think about it” that is). Very important. The kind of importance that resonates with everyone, sort of like when Tiger Woods hits a hole in one, or better yet, when he runs over a fire hydrant. Now. That. Is. Important. (Not really, but it is more entertaining than dieting. You gotta give him that.) Dieting sucks. Let’s face it and not disguise it. People with ADHD have a hard enough…
  • Several Studies Say Drinking COFFEE May Be GOOD, even GREAT!

    Bryan Hutchinson
    1 Apr 2012 | 2:23 am
In a recent study of tens of thousands of people over many years, it was found that coffee drinkers (I raise my hand with pride) have no more heart attacks or strokes than those who do not drink coffee! But, here’s the catch, coffee drinkers actually appear to have lower risk. (Get out of town! That’s my kind of catch.) It’s true. The study says so. For me that’s good enough. (I sip my cup of Joe in satisfaction.) I love coffee. I do. I sip it. I caress it. And. Let me be a little more open than usual (you can look away), I sometimes talk softly to it. Yes. Coffee may provide the best…

So today I had to jump through another hoop on the road to appealing my son’s social security decision. For those of you who don’t know, it is very rare to be approved on the first go round. The first time I got his denial letter on Christmas Eve, “Merry Christmas”. Yes I expected a denial, but on Christmas Eve. I have been dreading this day because not only did I have to traverse my own issues, I did not give my son his medicine until the appointment was over so he could be in his full glory. Have you ever spent the whole morning with a unmedicated 12-year-old…

Back when BB was newly diagnosed, our social lives took a major hit. At the time, we didn’t care — we were too worried, too overwhelmed, overextended and exhausted. It got better as years went by, with us having a smaller, more focused group of friends and a new idea of what was ‘fun.’ Our priorities shifted and we adapted to the new way of life. Now that BB is older, we can leave him with an older sibling sometimes. We don’t do it often, but it’s nice to know that there’s the option if something’s a big enough of an occasion, so we’ve got…

Students with Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) often have trouble focusing their thoughts and teasing out important points during a lecture, or later organizing their ideas when they go to write a term paper or other report. However, there are techniques these students can use to focus their thoughts, to write effective papers and hopefully someday get through the best PhD program, instead of the best PhD online program. ADHDers have the wrong expectations of non-ADHDers. We think they are like us. Foolishly we reveal something of our inner lives — show our vulnerability —  and we assume that as a gesture of good faith they will do the same. So we peel back our skin, exposing muscles, organs and nerves. See, this is what I’m made of. Now show me yours. Too many times, after we’ve exposed our vital organs and tissue, someone picks up a stick and starts jabbing. The pain shoots through our very core. We close up the skin. It’s too late. The damage has been done. It is a painful lesson…

As I write this I’m surrounded by one of the “markers” of A.D.D. – those ever growing “piles.” My desktop is covered with piles of paper and there’s also a pile on the floor. The dining room table has a pile though it’s not as high as the one on the floor. Still, after three years of medication and self-imposed behavior modification I’m noticing changes. They are not dramatic, they are not monumental (though to an A.D.D.er they are monumental) but they are changes nonetheless. I noticed the changes by accident. [ READ MORE ]

    3 May 2012 | 12:47 pm
“Life must be lived as play” ~Plato It’s well known that play and having fun is a vital part of a child’s development. A little less known is that having fun is very beneficial both mentally and physically for adults. For example, in relieving stress (with the release of endorphins)  and boosting the immune system. Yet having fun as an adult is sort of frowned on and viewed as lazy and ‘slacking off’ the important business of being an adult. This resistance is amplified among ADHD adult population. As they feel there is  so much they ‘should’ being doing,…
  • Can you have ADD and ADHD?

    Jacqueline Sinfield
    26 Apr 2012 | 7:45 pm
Great question. However, it isn’t possible to have ADD and ADHD as both terms describe the same condition. It is a little confusing because over the years the official name for ADD and ADHD has changed (ADHD is currently the official and most up to date title). Here is the time line of how it happened: In 1980, ADD described a person who had Attention Deficit Disorder and ADHD or Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder was the phrase used to describe someone who also experienced hyperactivity. In 1987, the official term changed, now the term ADHD is used for anyone who was diagnosed…

  • How To Eliminate Clutter When You Have ADHD

    Jacqueline Sinfield
    9 Mar 2012 | 7:53 am
ADHD and clutter often go hand in hand. Yet clutter in your life, is very damaging. It makes focus and concentration hard, (even if you don’t think it doesn’t effect you it does!). It makes you late because you struggle to find things. It eats your time because belongings need maintenance, even if it’s a dusting once in awhile. A disorganized and cluttered environment keeps you socially isolated because you don’t want to invite people into your space. A disorganized environment makes you feel overwhelmed and anxious and there is a direct link to clutter and depression.
